I was born and raised in the Northern Capital and the Cultural Centre of Russia - St.Petersburg.
The history of this beautiful city began in 1703, May 27th when Peter the Great, looking for the site for his new fortress, found Zayachiy Island and a Peter and Paul fortress was founded there. This day became an official birthday of the city.
During the construction of the fortress a lot of workers were dying because of poor food supply, damp climate and long working hours; but for the Northern war with Sweden was still going on, the fortress had to be completed as soon as possible because of its strategic importance. Due to the boggy nature of the terrain, the area was considered unhealthy for a town, but Peter the Great continued constructing the city despite all the losses and extra expenditures. By 1712 the city had grown enough to become the new Russian capital.
